We have chosen to stay opened, but we will be going a different route than what was before. We will be concentrating on a spay/neuter program for Henry County. We need to think of the details and put it all together, but the future will be a much different one. Changes will slowly be made to the website as things come together. We will also maintain a small presence in rescue work for neglected animals.
We have had many supporters over the years and we would like to acknowledge that without them, we never would have lasted this long or done so much good. We thank each and every one of you.
Please stay tuned for updated information as we progress in a new way for the community in which we have survived for so long.
Hoofstock laws and other farm animals
It is illegal for any humane society in the state of Tennessee to go onto the property of farmstock abuse cases and look into allegations of animal cruelty without permission first. Within Henry County this is the job of the Henry County Extension Service located at:
1120 Tyson Avenue
Paris, TN 38242-0188
(731) 642-2941 - Phone
The Henry County Extension Office IS NOT a part of the Humane society!! Please do not call them directly. It is the job of the local law enforcement agencies to contact them for hoofstock issues. The numbers you need to call are listed as follows:
County calls: Henry Co. Sheriff's Dept. - 642-1672
Inside Paris City Limits: Paris Police Dept. - 642-2424
For any other calls related to domestic or exotic animals, please use the contact information which has always been listed towards the bottom of the page.
Tax Status: We are a permanent 501(c)(3) organization. Any and all donations can be used as a tax deduction for your records. Tax I.D. #780117615.
Donations - If you are looking for an easy way to donate, just look for our adoption barrels at Mineral Wells Animal Clinic, Lakeway Animal Clinic, Kroger's, IGA going out towards the lake, and the E.W. James on the west side of town. You can drop food items, cleaning supplies, and other pet supplies in the barrels for your convenience. Thank you to those that have so generously donated already!
We are a no kill organization and try every means available to find good homes for the animals housed here. Some of these have serious medical issues or behavior issues and the kindest thing to do is humane euthanization. Many can get better with a little vet care and TLC. There's just no reason we can't make the world a little better for our friends. This is one reason donations are so important. You may donate using our PayPal option near the bottom of the page. You can also send check and money order donations to:
The Henry Co. Humane Soc.
400 Mays Bridge Rd.
Springville, TN 38256
The HCHS is listed through Igive.com.
This is a website with lots of large name stores such as Barnes and Nobles, Oriental Trading Co., and smaller not so commonly known stores who have all agreed to have a portion of all purchases go to the group of choice by the member who signs up for this free shopping adventure. When you purchase online from one of the Igive.com sponsored stores you will earn a percentage that will build in a special Igive account. The proceeds will then be mailed out to the organization of choice. Take a look, register, choose the Henry Co. Humane Soc. from the list of organizations, and shop!
Video:This is a powerful video. I got permission to link it to our site from the kind people at Meow or Never Sanctuary. Click HERE to watch it. It takes a few minutes to load on a regular dial-up connection, but it is well worth it.
Tip of the Week - 11/09/08
Toxic Fumes and Birds
The winter can be a dangerous time for our birds because there is less fresh air let into the house. With no cross-ventilation, many fumes can reach your bird, which might not any other time of the year. Beware of the following products all year long, but especially in the winter:
· Teflon. Not just on skillets, but on range drip pans, irons, ironing board covers, waffle irons, etc. When heated to over 500 degrees, Teflon emits lethal fumes that will kill your bird in minutes.
· Cleaning liquids
· Paints
· Turpentine
· Hairspray
· Perfume
· Nail polish
· Nail polish remover
· Cigarette smoke (one of the most toxic items on the list)
Signs of distress include, but are not limited to: labored breathing, sitting at the bottom of the cage, feathers dramatically fluffed, “drunken” behavior. If any of these signs are present in the instance of any of the above product list of dangers – get your bird to fresh air immediately and call a vet practiced in bird care.
Do not wait until your bird is sick to find a vet. Call around now and have that number ready for that “just in case” scenario.

If you wish to adopt you will need to fill out an application. You may call the contact number below or send an email to henrycounty.humane@yahoo.com
Currently we have no shelter. All of the animals we have listed are in foster care in our own homes. If you see an animal you like we can make an appointment for the home which the animal is located.
We need breaks, too...so Sat. and Sun. are ours unless prior arrangements have been made or an emergency comes up.
